Google announced the Google Blog Search Pinging Service today. If you want to make sure your latest posts appear in Google’s Blog Search then, like other services including Technorati or Weblogs.com, you will want to ping them when you update. This can be done in two ways:

Over the last couple of days, Akismet racked up the 1000th attempt at spamming this site in just 3 months. Only one of those was a false positive (sorry Hans).

Over the time I have spent deleting spam from the Akismet section I have come to wonder what the spammers get out of it. Some comments are gibberish and the majority (on this site anyway) are trying to sell either fake drugs or sex. How is this going to help anyone who reads this blog? Wordpress now includes rel="nofollow" in all comment URLs which means that Google will not give any credit to those URLs in it’s site rankings. So comment spam doesn’t affect their hallowed PageRank. What is in it for them?

Today I spent a little time improving my comment area just for you. At least I tried, here’s what I did:

Gravatars

Pictures are wonderful, so if you have a gravatar and make a comment, your gravatar will now appear thanks to Skippy’s Gravatar Plugun. This had to be the easiest addition to the site today, just a few touches added to the style sheet and voila!

It looks like I have failed almost instantly in my first experience in blogging. I have disregarded tips about blogging that have been set down for years and not to my surprise, found that only 4 people visited this site yesterday. If you are reading this, then I apologise for not posting anything for a whole week and I promise that I will rectify this situation starting from now.

I would love to set myself a proper goal for how often I am going to post, but I am so hectic at the moment that I cannot promise anything (especially nothing quite as severe as this). However, you can certainly expect to see more posts appearing here in the near future.

In fact, I’ve just thought of something I need to write about, better finish off what I was supposed to be doing before I started writing this post so I can write another!
