Quicklink: “Most Websites Failing Disabled”
Posted on Wednesday, December 6th, 2006
Congratulations to Tony Blair, the owner of one of the 3 websites to reach the minimum accessibility standards of the WACG in the recent accessibility review by Nomensa commissioned by the UN as part of its International Day of Disabled Persons.
Disappointing
97% of websites tested failed to reach any level of accessibility. 93% of sites did not provide alt attributes for graphics. 98% did not follow industry standards for coding. (more disappointing stats)
Promising
However bad the results are, at least they have been exposed, it has hit the news and was the subject of one of the accessibility presentations at the UN. This sort of global publicity for the inaccessibility of most major websites should hopefully encourage more and more companies to take action. There is no quick solution, but the more pressure to provide one there is, the closer we move towards an internet in which everyone is equally important and therefore equally able to use every site.

Hans Says:I think there’s still lots to do for all those major sites to reach a minimum accessibility. Still who knows perhaps in the future, that same accessibility that some are trying to achieve might become useless and still they would have to change for other standards.

Stéphanie Says:It is amazing the number of government websites that don’t even reach the basic level of accessibility. You know, such as using the alt attribute for the img tag. Such details matter.
I’ve worked for a while in a web team for a goverment office and honestly, nobody would put much effort into this even though there were official and reliable guidelines and resources to develop accessible content.
People focus on content mostly and don’t even try to develop proper navigation schemes. It’s sad because half the time the elements that need modifying in order to achieve a better level of usability don’t imply complicated manipulation [sigh].
